Former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton once wrote a book called “It Takes A Village”. In that book Clinton indicates that every adult has some influence over the way a child ultimately views the world and how those children relate to that world.

This article is not about Clinton’s book, but rather the concept of how interrelated we are as a culture.

When it comes to entrepreneurialism on the Internet it truly does take a village for your business to succeed. This article will look at two different types of villages required for online business success.

Let’s take a look at the first village.

ASSISTANTS

These are the people that have helped you get to the place of business on the web. These individuals could be supporting parents, a spouse, former employer, former co-workers, business mentors, etc.

No one ever really gets to a destination without someone else helping them. There can be positive outcomes related to self reliance, but with entrepreneurialism a business owner begins to see clearly there is a great deal of personal debt involved in the development of a dream. Just as you need individuals to help shape and mold you into who you are, you also need to intentionally develop a presence on the web that will provide a welcome to others whom you may have the opportunity to influence just as they contribute to your financial success.

Whatever legacy we leave behind is always commingled with the assistance we have gained through personal relationships. The individuals who have helped us along the way are honored as we work to pass along the collective wisdom they instilled in us combined with our own personal knowledge.

Entrepreneurialism is best dedicated to the idea that each of us needs others. In business the consumer needs the business owner and the business owner needs the consumer.

No matter how you look at it, entrepreneurialism requires a village.

Excited, you send your CV and covering letter and wait, no response. You call the agency handling the opportunity and they fob you off, either saying that your CV hasn’t arrived or you simply dont have the experience necessary.

Behind the scenes…
It is possible at this point that indeed you do have experience that the company will be interested in but the recruitment consultant will not forward your application. There are a number of reasons for this:

The company is paying the agency a LOT of money for their search, so they will be looking for someone who almost EXACTLY matches their desired criteria.
*
The agency do not fully understand your skills as they are simply ley people working in a professional field.
*
The company will probably not want to be paying the huge agency fees but have little choice as they need good staff.

What you should do..

This means that you have to take your job search into your own hands. This will mean trying to find out who the company is and contacting them directly, heres how.

* Find the advert you initially applied for.
* Using a search engine, search for the most recognisable parts of the advert, the more the agency shows off about the company they are recruiting for the easier this will be. e.g

Our client has been a leader in it’s field for 15 years, specialising in recruitment into the sales and construction market. They currently have offices in New York, Paris and London. They are opening new offices this year in Bangkok and Sydney and this means that any succesful applicant will have international opportunities at their fingertips, blah blah….

They are currently looking for a Sales Consultant with over 3 years experience in a familiar industry etc. etc.

* Use specific areas of the advertisement. So search for ‘15 years sales construction New York Paris London recruitment’. This should bring up the company you require, if not, read on. If it does skip to ‘The Call’.
* If this search brings up a load of rubbish, which it shouldn’t there is one option left for you. Calling the agency direct. Make up a fictional person, someone who has exactly the experience you require for the role. Phone and ask for the relevant consultant, suddenly they will have loads of time for you, finally! Explain to them your experience, they will say ‘please send me your cv’, say ‘no problem’. Get their email address. Then say to them one of two things:
o ‘Oh, by the way, I would like to find out more about the company, whats their website please. Thanks’

or

o I am very careful about who I send my CV to, let me just check if I have forwarded my CV to this company already, what are they called?
* This may or may not work but it is the best shot you have. Usually the above methods works about 50% of the time.

The Call..

* Phone the company and ask for the person who handles recruitment. When they ask your name, just say your first name, it will sound more familiar and will bypass many suspicions they may have.

If unsuccessful

* If you can’t speak to that person or they cut you off, phone back the next day and ask who handles their recruitment, then you will have the name and can call directly bypassing all suspicions.

You get through

* When you get the HR representative or Internal Recruiter, explain who you are and what you want. Be pleasant and explain your experience in the best light you can. Sell yourself as this may the only chance you get.

If unsuccesful

* In many [companies|businesses|organisations|groups] the communications between HR and line managers is very poor. The next step is phoning the actual line manager who has the vacancy. Phone the company and ask who handles their X division. Also try using the website for this information. Generally this person will be happy to receive your call as they dislike dealing with HR and are seeing few positive results. They will tell you then and there if you are right for the role, ask them if there ‘is anything else suitable for me within the business at the moment?’.

Rate Your Service Five Different Ways

Have you experienced exceptional customer service? How did it make you feel? I do not know about you but it gives me a wonderful feeling somebody showing they really care. When I receive service as such, I try to let the person or manager know. In today’s world it is rare that you receive comments of satisfaction, much less for superior service.

I recently stopped at a Captain D’s fast food restaurant in Tifton, Georgia. As my husband and I were walking up to the restaurant, an employee was outside and greeted us with a friendly “hello”. We walk into the restaurant and we are greeted by many friendly “hellos”. The front counter and kitchen personnel were all wearing big smiles and welcoming faces. I asked them if a contest was going on within the franchise system to judge who the friendliest store was. I was told by the order taker that it was their job to greet customers in a friendly manner everyday. I also noted as I walked through the door, that most everyone was busy cleaning something. The counter, the floor, the tabletops, the bathrooms; you name it the employees obviously took great pride in their jobs and the store.

My experience at this location made me aware of how important it is that we not only give customer service, but that we exceed our customers’ expectations. These employees exceeded my expectation by the constant smiling faces, friendly conversations, customer care in a fast food environment, and cleanliness of the facilities. If I were that franchise owner I would be very proud.

Where do you rate with your customer service? Some of my recommendations on evaluating services are:

Do an email survey questionnaire. The answers you receive will be a huge benefit to you if you take heed to them.

Have Customer Service Representatives ask questions about the service to incoming callers. Some people will not want to take the time but others will be glad you asked.

Mail a survey via postal service. Do not leave out those who do not share the world’s enthusiasm with technology.

Adapt your survey or phone queries to your business model. In a franchise model, each owner would need to adapt their efforts to how they do business. Perhaps their only venues are fairs and festivals. Survey your customers as you supply their product. Perhaps give them so much off if they fill out your questionnaire.

Be creative and make it fun for the customer. This is just another form of exceptional customer service. How many times have you had fun telling a business what you thought about their service?

Most companies realize the need for customer service but successful companies strive for exceptional. Exceptional service is what makes you stand out from your competitor and if applied effectively you will not have to worry about the competition in the future.

Look at it this way: the reason you picked up your hobby in the first place was probably because you enjoyed it. Hobbies are supposed to be fun. Still not convinced? Here’s something else to consider – everyone I’ve met who own a golf, fishing, or scuba-diving business tells me they play, dive or get on the water less than before. Owning a business that is related to your hobby will not get you more involved in the enjoyable part. Instead, it will take you away from the fun of the hobby.

Objectivity is another major concern when it comes to translating a hobby to a business. For example, let’s say you enjoy fishing, so you decide to open a fishing supply store. You will typically stock your store with products you like – which won’t necessarily be what your customers want. Also, you may enjoy fishing, but sitting in a boat with a pole is not the same as running a store, and you may not have the skills necessary for retail management. See the problems?

Of course, your dreams and desires are important, and you need to be passionate about your company to be successful, but it is a mistake to let your interests and not your skills dictate the type of business you should own if you decide to become an entrepreneur. Now that you know what you should not do, it’s time to look at what you should do when getting into your own business:

* Consider looking to your current career instead of your hobby. What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most, and what kind of business would allow you to concentrate on those enjoyable aspects?

* Focus on your strengths, and be honest with yourself. Are you a strong manager? Good with people? Talented at a craft? Try to find a business that will let you capitalize on your strengths, while incorporating what you love to do.

* Do your research! Starting or buying a business is a huge investment, and if you buy the wrong business for your skills and fail, you probably won’t want to try again. Know what you’re getting into before you begin to give yourself the best chance of success.

You can run a business that you enjoy, as long as you are realistic in your decision-making process. You don’t have to give up on your dreams – simply refocus your intentions, and go for it!
